மெலிந்து சிரித்து பார்வை மாற்றாது நோக்கும்

யாரோ தவறவிட்ட சரித்திர நூல்
மண்பட்டு நனைகிறது
மரத்தடியில் கவனிப்பாரற்று.

stretch and wet
their hands and feet
A whiplash of the teacher’s cane
shuts out the clamour in the veranda

Emerging from the run-down washroom
adolescent merry-makers
dance about, soaking in rain
at the square with the flag mast-
decks of cards popping out of secret pouches

With thin smiles and rapt eyes,
the toddlers have a look
of awestruck wonder

In the sudden drizzle
a history textbook someone had lost
gets damp and muddy
under a tree
unnoticed by all

Public spaces
become the fields of play
The street performer
stages his tricks
with his family

The drummer packs up,
makes a bundle of the alms-cloth
​a​nd all within,
​not ca​ring to count

The puny girl
Tossed high and caught
has fallen asleep
on the footpath

Spectators disperse
for another show

Marking the memory
of the wrenched out post
is the street
with its dug up hole.
