The Kingfisher

நகுல் வசன்

The sky was clear and blue
barring the clouds gathering in the South.
No sooner the unruffled pond
entered my thoughts than the waves began;
A frog hopped into the water.
To appreciate the lotus flower, apparently.
At the sky, vacantly I stare. Ha!
Just then, out of the sky, headlong,
accursed Menaka falls,
and falls.

Dazzling with the seven colors of Indra’s Realm
her garment unfurling in the sky,
into the pond headlong Menaka falls.
No one else but me.

I waited for Menaka to rise,
into the air a Kingfisher rose.
A fish in its beak, seeking
a shadowed haunt it flew.
Clear and blue, yet again, the sky.
