பாழ் கழிவரைவிட்டு வெளியேறி
கொடிமரத் திடலில்
நீர் ஊறிக் கூத்தாடும் விடலைகளின்
ரகசியப்பை பிதுங்கி விழும் சீட்டுக்கட்டுகள்.
மெலிந்து சிரித்து பார்வை மாற்றாது நோக்கும்
மழலையரின் கலவர ஆர்வம்.
எதிர்பாராத குறுமழைக்கு
யாரோ தவறவிட்ட சரித்திர நூல்
மண்பட்டு நனைகிறது
மரத்தடியில் கவனிப்பாரற்று.

stretch and wet
their hands and feet
A whiplash of the teacher’s cane
shuts out the clamour in the veranda

Emerging from the run-down washroom
adolescent merry-makers
dance about, soaking in rain
at the square with the flag mast-
decks of cards popping out of secret pouches

With thin smiles and rapt eyes,
the toddlers have a look
of awestruck wonder

In the sudden drizzle
a history textbook someone had lost
gets damp and muddy
under a tree
unnoticed by all
